Ayse - English Summary

On Monday, December 26, 2022, at 8:22 p.m., regional express train (TER) No. 884 684 from Saint-Gervais-les-Bains to Annemasse hit an electrically powered light utility vehicle on level crossing (LC) No. 13 in the commune of Ayse in the Haute-Savoie department.
This LC is equipped with automatic light and sound signaling with two half-barriers. The railway installations suffered minor damage and were put back into service the following day.
The TER, which was traveling at a speed of 107 km/h (66 mph) at the time of the impact, did not derail despite the presence of part of the vehicle stuck at the front, and stopped 430 meters downstream of the LC following emergency braking. Among the eleven occupants of the train, none were injured either during the collision or during the fire that broke out in the electric vehicle, slightly damaging the train.
The driver of the road vehicle, who was outside his vehicle, was not injured, and his vehicle was completely destroyed by the impact and the fire.

The direct cause of the accident was the immobilization of the road vehicle on the railway tracks shortly before the arrival of the train.

The technical investigations did not identify the causes of its immobilization, but the analysis of the actions of the train driver showed that railway procedures could be better known, better applied and sometimes clarified. Consequently, the BEA-TT issues recommendations and invitations :
on the initial and continuing training of train drivers ;
on the procedure for evacuating passengers ;
on the management by the train driver of a fire ;
on interactions between railway personnel and emergency services.
